Remembering: Jay McShann (January 12, 1916 – Dec Remembering: Jay McShann (January 12, 1916 – December 7, 2006) 🎹 — Born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and nicknamed Hootie — James Columbus McShann would go on to form a profoundly successful and influential music career spanning 61 years. McShann was a tremendous inspiration and mentor during Charlie Parker’s 1938 era; touring with Jay McShann’s territory band, playing nightclubs and other venues throughout the southwest, as well as Chicago and New York City. This collection celebrates the 70th anniversary of one of jazz’s most legendary concerts which took place on May 15, 1953, at Toronto’s Massey Hall. The show featured be-bop titans Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Max Roach, and Bud Powell. This new release features audio restoration and remastering by GRAMMY-winning engineer Paul Blakemore, with lacquers cut by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio.⁠ ⁠ The 19-track box set includes the quintet’s original 12-inch Debut Records LP release (featuring bass overdubs by Mingus), all six quintet tracks without overdubs, performances by the Powell/Mingus/Roach trio, and Roach’s “Drum Conversation,” making it the complete collection of recordings captured that night.
